NASA releases images of Mars honeycomb formations
NASA's Curiosity rover has discovered geological formations resembling honeycombs on the surface of Mars, known as polygonal fractures, each measuring between 4 and 8 centimeters in width. These formations are among the most notable discoveries of the mission since its landing in 2012, indicating extensive activity in the "Gale Crater" area. This may reflect various geological processes, including drying mud cracks, evidence of alternating warm and cold periods, or compression forces pushing water out of sediments. Alongside these formations, the detection of organic compounds and clues of past water presence help in understanding Mars's ancient environmental history and its potential to have supported microbial life in the past.
