Egyptian Diplomat on Shanghai Organization's Role
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization now serves as a global platform through which the Global South is participating in reshaping the international order. The organization has evolved from a regional framework focused on security and counter-terrorism into a comprehensive entity comprising ten member states and 15 partner countries, encompassing about half of the world's population. The organization believes that developing countries have an important role in building a multipolar international system that addresses new challenges and promotes justice and equality, with strong support from China, which has been seeking to expand and advance the organization since its founding in 2001. It appears that the current international system suffers from double standards and the dominance of a few powerful countries, prompting many nations to join both the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS in pursuit of greater balance and to reduce reliance on the Western-dominated system.
