Global butterfly migration patterns update
A comprehensive study has shown that climate change is altering the geographical distribution of butterflies worldwide, with the range of most species expanding while others are shrinking, posing a threat to their survival. The data indicate that 79% of the changes in distribution are linked to warming temperatures and extreme weather events. While 80% of species have expanded their ranges, 27% have experienced a contraction. Rising temperatures are causing some species to migrate northward or to higher elevations, although upward movement accounts for only 22% of the recorded changes. This reflects the complexity of how butterflies interact with climate change and its impact on their diversity and habitats.
