Global drought threatens water supplies
The report shows that severe drought and climate change are causing rivers to shrink and lakes to diminish, affecting transportation, energy, and agriculture worldwide. In Europe, the Rhine and Danube rivers have reached their historic lowest levels, leading to halted ship movements and reduced steel production. The decline in water levels has also revealed wrecks of ships sunk during World War II. In France, July was recorded as the hottest month since record-keeping began in 1900, with rainfall reduced by 70%, and large-scale wildfires broke out. Other countries such as Turkey, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, and the United States are experiencing the impacts of drought in changing natural landscapes, threatening food security, and deteriorating water resources. This underscores that the drought crisis is not only regional but also serves as a warning about the fragility of the global ecosystem and the far-reaching consequences of climate change on human lives and nature.
