Abdulol (Abdulrahman) Al-Sayed won the Democratic primary election in Michigan for the U.S. Senate seat, becoming the first progressive to achieve such a victory statewide. His campaign focused on healthcare and economic issues, as well as opposition to unconditional military aid to Israel. He belongs to the progressive wing of the party. His campaign was heavily attacked by former President Donald Trump, who described him as a "communist" and a "hateful man," claiming that he does not love Israel or Jews. Mr. Al-Sayed is now competing against Republican Mike Rogers for the Senate seat, amid expectations that Democrats will regain control of the Senate in the midterm elections scheduled for November, where candidates are competing for 35 seats.
