The FIFA decision to suspend US forward Folarin Balogun for one match during the 2026 World Cup drew criticism from Howard Webb, head of refereeing for English football. Webb considered that the way the case was handled undermines fans' trust in the integrity of refereeing decisions. Balogun was sent off during the United States vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina match, but FIFA canceled the suspension after controversial interventions, including a phone call between then-U.S. President Trump and FIFA President Infantino, despite FIFA denying that this influenced the decision. Webb expressed concern that such events open the door to corruption theories and tarnish the image of refereeing, especially with increasing politicization of decisions and social media platforms sometimes spreading unfounded accusations. He emphasized that these incidents do not reflect the true spirit of the game and damage both fans' confidence and the reputation of referees.
