US debt reaches record $40T

The U.S. national debt has surpassed the $40 trillion mark for the first time, reaching an all-time high of $40.05 trillion at the close of trading on Tuesday, following a significant acceleration in debt accumulation in recent months. This increase reflects higher government spending on social security and healthcare programs, as well as defense expenses and rising interest payments on the debt, amid pressures to balance spending with fiscal policies. It is worth noting that this figure represents a notable rise compared to March of this year when the debt exceeded $39 trillion, and previous forecasts had aimed for it to reach approximately $39.4 trillion by the end of the 2026 fiscal year.
