Clashes renewed at dawn today between Somali forces and rebel militias on the outskirts of Baidoa, southwest Somalia, amid heavy gunfire and civilians fleeing their homes. The government forces responded to an attack launched by fighters allied with former South West State President Abdul Aziz Hassan Mohammed Lftagaren and the Al-Shabaab movement, linked to Al-Qaeda, marking a new escalation in the ongoing conflict between the government and opposition over control of the region. The clashes resulted in 71 injuries, including 15 women, and the death of one civilian. Baidoa is a major humanitarian hub, hosting over half a million internally displaced persons due to conflict and drought. The city was previously captured by government forces in March after Lftagaren's resignation; he had been the governor of the state since 2018.
