The European Union's "EUNAVFOR" (Operation IRINI) maritime operation report highlights the ongoing smuggling of weapons into Libya, despite the arms embargo imposed by the UN Security Council since 2011. The report indicated that 2,926 suspicious flights were observed in August, and three vessels violating the embargo were rerouted. Additionally, 98 reports were submitted to the UN Panel of Experts regarding violations of the embargo. However, questions remain about the effectiveness of European monitoring mechanisms, especially with the entry of aerial weapons, including drones, which reflect the expanding proliferation of arms and the evolving capabilities of armed factions. Research confirms that IRINI's current operations are limited to monitoring rather than interception, raising concerns about the continued flow of weapons amidst ongoing political and security divisions in Libya and the multiplicity of armed groups.
