The "Alternative for Germany" party was founded in 2013 in response to opposition to euro policies and the European economic crisis. It capitalized on the large waves of migration in 2015 and 2016 to reinforce its anti-immigration stance, calling for border restrictions and forced repatriation of migrants. The party has seen notable growth, securing 12.6% of the vote in the 2017 elections and becoming the largest small party in the parliament. Its support further increased to 20.8% in the 2025 elections. The party is considered among the most pro-Russia, opposing sanctions on Moscow and advocating for the resumption of Russian gas purchases. Some label it as a far-right organization under surveillance due to chants and activities with Nazi undertones. The party achieved its first local election victory in Thuringia in 2024 and is on the verge of coming to power in Saxony-Anhalt after polls showed it leading the upcoming 2026 elections.
