The statue of "Lady in Blue" by American artist Chabalala Siel, displayed in Trafalgar Square in London for two years, depicts a dark-skinned woman from modern citizenship. It focuses on representing contemporary women and identity, and is her first sculpture in the UK since her previous statue, "Seated," was vandalized. The work highlights the underrepresentation of women of color in the public sphere and aims to spark discussions about identity and race, while also emphasizing the importance of moving beyond political categorizations when engaging with sculpture art. The statue was attacked by unknown individuals and rejected by the local community, reflecting social challenges and awareness of social issues. The artist underscores the importance of public representation in enhancing understanding of identity and societal changes.
