UEFA's possible action on Barcelona over Negreira
The article discusses the possibility that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) may take disciplinary action against FC Barcelona regarding the Negreira case, without waiting for final judicial rulings from the Spanish judiciary. The report indicates that Article 12 of UEFA's regulations allows it to assess the conduct of clubs from the perspective of sporting integrity, especially concerning ongoing financial payments to the former deputy president of the referees committee, which are suspected to aim at influencing match outcomes or exerting improper pressure. It also clarifies that UEFA may impose sanctions based on evidence related to bias or attempts to impact the fairness of matches, even if a final judicial verdict has not yet been issued. Additionally, the Spanish judiciary remains responsible for criminal investigations, but UEFA retains the authority for independent disciplinary assessment and may take measures against Barcelona if violations of integrity regulations are proven.
