Zahran Mammadani stirs controversy on October 7th
The article discusses protests and criticisms directed at New York City Mayor Zehran Mamedani for commemorating the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In his remarks, he condemned war crimes committed by both sides. He acknowledged his responsibility for the horrific crimes that occurred that day, while criticizing Israel for committing genocide in Gaza, where more than 74,000 Palestinians, including 21,000 children, were killed. He emphasized that many New Yorkers share in the grief, but faced severe criticism from Jewish leaders for his statement. He pointed out the need to focus on the suffering of Palestinians, while some Jewish leaders stressed the importance of honoring the victims of the attack in a manner befitting their tragedy, viewing Mamedani's remarks as an attempt to use the event to criticise Israel.
