Palestinians await election postponement
Palestinian sources reported that President Mahmoud Abbas has decided to postpone the legislative and presidential elections scheduled for November 2023, due to the lack of readiness among Palestinian factions, internal opposition, and security and political challenges. The decision was made upon the request of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, to promote national dialogue and create an opportunity to improve internal conditions, especially since the current political and security environment is not favorable for holding elections at this time. Additionally, Israel rejected allowing the committee to enter Palestinian cities and Jerusalem to oversee preparations, further complicating the process. The elections were originally supposed to take place after reforms signed within the Palestinian authority, but disputes within Fatah and reservations from Hamas and other factions led to their postponement, with ongoing efforts to create suitable conditions in the future.
