Tunisia's rising crackdown threatens press freedom
In Tunisia, press freedom is experiencing a sharp decline five years after the revolution, with around 20 journalists facing legal prosecutions. Some have been forced to leave the country, while the military and authorities are accused of suppressing independent media and imposing restrictions on journalistic coverage. This situation results from the concentration of power in the hands of President Kais Saied since he assumed broad powers in 2021, leading Tunisia's ranking on the Press Freedom Index to drop to 137th worldwide. Journalists face increasing restrictions, with some arrested, while many endure psychological and family pressures amid limited media spaces and a reduction in critical programs.
