Azerbaijan school uniform rules ignite hijab debate
The article concerns a controversy that arose in Azerbaijan regarding dress codes in public schools. The government announced new regulations governing the attire of teachers and students, aimed at strengthening the secular character of the schools. These rules led to widespread protests, especially after reports emerged of hijab-wearing students being barred from entering certain schools, resulting in arrests and violent clashes between protesters and the police. Although the government issued a decision requiring students to wear clean and professional clothing in line with the secular nature of the education system, protests continued. A political escalation occurred following intervention by a Turkish official, who criticized Azerbaijan's policies regarding the hijab, which angered local authorities. They in turn demanded that foreign interference cease and that internal affairs be left to Azerbaijan.
