Tunisians protest against Saeed's rule
Thousands demonstrated in Tunisia today in the largest protest in years, demanding the restoration of democracy and freedoms. The protest came amid accusations against President Kais Saied of imposing an authoritarian rule and failing to address the escalating economic crisis. Protesters called for an end to the persecution of opposition figures and for improvements in public services. Participants from various political groups and civil society gathered, chanting slogans calling for the overthrow of the regime and the preservation of freedoms. The country is facing a severe economic crisis, including water and electricity outages, shortages of medicines and basic goods. Saied faces accusations of repressing civil society organizations and arresting journalists and opposition leaders, though he insists he is working to purge the country of corruption and rejects being called a dictator. His steps have led to the dissolution of parliament and widespread changes in institutions, drawing criticism.
