Spain heavy rain death toll reaches 4
The death toll from heavy rains in Spain has risen to four people. A 79-year-old woman was killed when she was swept away by floodwaters at her home in Oliva near Valencia, and a 64-year-old man died after suffering a heart attack while camping in the same area. Previous fatalities have also been recorded due to floodwaters, including the drowning of a woman in the sea north of Valencia. The intense rainfall caused an accumulation of more than 600 liters per square meter, one of the highest recorded levels. The government issued stay-at-home orders and closed schools due to the floods. The severity of the rainfall is attributed to rising temperatures in the Mediterranean Sea. This wave of storms is considered exceptional, comparable to the November 1987 event, when Spain recorded its highest rainfall ever, with 817 liters in 24 hours.
