Latakia Port Adds Cranes to Boost Container Capacity
The Port of Latakia has received six modern gantry cranes worth over 16 million euros, aimed at upgrading infrastructure and increasing the efficiency of the container terminal. This is part of a development contract with the French company CMA CGM. The new cranes are intended to enhance the port’s capacity to accommodate the increasing volume of ships and trade, which reached 4 million tons in the first ten months of 2026. Plans are in place to quadruple this activity over the next three years. The port development contract involves total investments of 230 million euros, with 30 million euros allocated for the first year and 200 million euros over the following four years. The focus is on constructing a new quay and accelerating the second expansion phase. This comes after an agreement was signed with the French company that has been managing the Port of Latakia since 2009, amid the Syrian government’s efforts to strengthen the role of international companies in developing vital infrastructure.
