Starlink Impact on Geopolitics
The article discusses the use of Starlink, a satellite network developed by Elon Musk, which relies on satellites to provide internet access in areas that are difficult to reach via traditional means. The network has been in use since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022 to support the military and facilitate civilian communication. It has also been reported to have been used during protests in Iran in 2026 and in conflict zones in Sudan and Gaza. However, Starlink faces criticism related to political dependence, environmental damage caused by the satellites, and security threats, especially as alternative technologies are in development, such as European satellite networks and American companies like Amazon, aiming to reduce reliance on it. Additionally, restrictions imposed on the service by official authorities, particularly in Ukraine and Iran, highlight political and security challenges associated with the expanding use of the network.
