Al-Hajri: Rabi' al-Awwal begins next Friday with a total eclipse not visible in the Gulf
The beginning of the month of Rabi' al-Awwal will occur astronomically on next Friday, August 14, 2026, coinciding with the conjunction of the Moon with the Sun on Wednesday, August 12, at 09:12 PM Bahrain time. The sighting of the new Moon will be possible in some Arab countries such as Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and Mauritania, accompanied by a partial solar eclipse at sunset, during which the largest obscuration of the Sun’s disk—up to approximately 98%—is likely to occur in northwest Algeria before gradually decreasing over the following two days. It will be difficult to observe the Rabi' al-Awwal crescent on the following night due to weak astronomical conditions, but observation will be easier on the evening of Friday, August 14, with good chances of clear visibility through photography techniques. Additionally, the Gulf region will witness a false eclipse and a partial solar eclipse in late August, with observations relating to the timings and appearances of these astronomical phenomena highlighting the importance of precise astronomical timing and accurate observation.
