Saudi-U.S. actions against Iran-backed sites in Iraq
Saudi and American forces targeted locations belonging to Iranian-backed militias in Iraq in response to drone attacks that targeted oil facilities in Saudi Arabia. These drone assaults were carried out by Iran-aligned militias from Iraqi territory. Riyadh confirmed that the attacks aimed to target vital infrastructure and stated they would respond appropriately to protect their security. Meanwhile, the United States and Saudi Arabia conducted precise strikes against militia-related targets in Iraq in retaliation for over 30 drone attacks within 72 hours, which resulted in casualties and the destruction of logistical and military targets. Washington clarified that these attacks were an attempt to strike American infrastructure and oil facilities, and emphasized that Iran and its militias are required to cease such assaults to avoid a harsher military response. For its part, the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces announced casualties among their ranks from the strikes, as damage assessments continue.
