Washington Calls for Europe to Act on Diesel Crisis
The U.S. Treasury Department has urged European allies to quickly release additional amounts from strategic diesel reserves to address rising prices and supply disruptions ahead of upcoming European discussions. Treasury Secretary Scott Bissent called on France and Germany to release approximately 120 million barrels of diesel stocks over six months, which accounts for more than 40% of Europe's emergency reserves, in an effort to manage the crisis. This comes amid American pressure on Europe to increase fuel supplies, with warnings that U.S. export restrictions could harm the European economy. It is also noted that the decision to draw from reserves remains within each EU member state's authorities, as governments coordinate efforts to regulate prices and preserve reserves to face future disruptions.
