European troops to support UNIFIL in Beirut
European countries are seeking to support security stability in Lebanon by deploying a new security and advisory mission to Beirut, before the end of the UNIFIL forces' mandate in December 2026. The mission is composed of approximately 100 military personnel and security experts led by France, Spain, and Italy, with the aim of enhancing the capabilities of the Lebanese army and security agencies, particularly in areas such as training, border control, and managing sovereign outlets, in order to prevent security gaps and halt the deterioration of the situation. Legal steps include adopting an official decision from the European Union, which is expected to be approved by foreign ministers at a meeting in Luxembourg. This European support reflects Lebanon’s desire to extend its international presence, while also rejecting the risks associated with a security vacuum and emphasizing the importance of extending the UNIFIL mandate, driven by concerns over worsening security conditions and challenges in implementing Resolution 1701.
