The article discusses the play "Darkness: Two Texts for One Play" by Ali Laftha Saeed, which highlights the deterioration of the cultural and political state of the Arab intellectual. It does so by illustrating the shift from a diversity of voices (polyphony) to the isolation of monodrama. The play employs semiotic and structural techniques, such as a conflicting scenic space that merges symbols of the cemetery and the library, and the scream of an inverted bicycle as a marker of futile movement, reflecting the psychological and cognitive collapse of the intellectual amidst destruction. The texts rely on meta-theatre elements and narrative techniques that emphasize the death of the verbal instrument and its transformation into tools of repression, with an internal depiction of psychological dependency through the deconstruction of symbolism and increased isolation. The work expresses the tragic situation of the Arab intellectual who loses the ability to influence, exposing how authority manipulates death and speech. It makes clear that the two texts represent phases of resistance and downfall, offering the director the freedom to choose a deconstructionist approach—serving as a living mirror to the reality of cultural and psychological decline.
