Lebanon responds to European plan for new peace mission
France and Italy are working to form an international alliance after the UNIFIL forces' mission in southern Lebanon concludes, with the aim of activating a new mechanism to strengthen Lebanon's sovereignty and stability. The Lebanese government emphasized the need for international forces to support local security, focusing on tasks related to monitoring and communication with Israel. The UNIFIL mandate is scheduled to end in late December 2026, amid international calls to maintain a military presence to monitor the ceasefire and support the Lebanese army, despite opposition from the United States and Israel.
