Germany family trends decline marriage rise divorce
According to data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, the number of new marriages reached 348,800 in 2025, marking the lowest level since 1950, with an 8.9% decline compared to 2003, reflecting a continued decrease in marriage rates. Divorce cases totaled approximately 130,100, representing a slight increase of 0.6% over 2024. The average duration of marriage before divorce has risen to about 14 years and 7 months, with an increase in divorces after 25 years of marriage. The data also shows an uptick in divorces among same-sex couples, despite the rise in marriage rates for gays and lesbians since same-sex marriage was legalized in 2017. These numbers confirm social changes in family structure and the patterns of marriage and divorce within German society.
