Syria seeks hanging for Assad's cousin
The Public Prosecutor's Office in Syria has demanded the death penalty for Atef Najib, a cousin of the deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, on charges of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes. These include systematic torture, premeditated murder of children and adults, incitement to kill, and torture leading to death. The prosecution considers his actions to be serious and requiring the maximum penalties. This comes as part of a trial ongoing since he was accused of being directly responsible for the oppressive campaigns and arrests in Daraa since 2011, particularly the incident involving the detention of children in March of the same year. The court is scheduled to issue its final verdict on August 11, along with a demand for civil compensation for the victims.
