Montevideo: Argentina-Brazil Tensions Signal Risks for Mercosur
The diplomatic crisis between Argentina and Brazil, the two largest members of Mercosur, illustrates escalating tensions that are affecting cooperation within the bloc. Uruguay’s Foreign Minister expressed regret over the crisis, considering it "bad news" for the common market, and noting that it could impact efforts at negotiation and regional collaboration. He called for the resumption of dialogue between the two countries to ease tensions, reaffirming Uruguay's readiness to assist in mediating if requested, although there are no current efforts in that direction. This crisis comes at a sensitive time, as Uruguay holds the presidency of the bloc and is setting the economic and political agenda, which diminishes its ability to respond effectively to the existing tensions among members.
