Crisis in Ceuta increases pressure on Madrid
The occupied city of Ceuta is suffering from a severe crisis due to the overcrowding of hundreds of unaccompanied migrant minors, with their numbers estimated at around 1,100 children, despite the capacity of the shelters not exceeding 90 people. Many of them live in difficult conditions, including temporary accommodations in warehouses or living on the streets and in parks, amid government efforts to identify their identities and find suitable places to host them. This crisis follows a large influx of migrants, as Madrid announced the repatriation of 70,000 of them to Morocco. However, the protection of minors has hindered deportation operations, leading to the announcement of emergency funding of 25 million euros and the conversion of two schools into temporary hosting centers. Authorities and political policies face resistance from some parties opposed to the redistribution of minors across regions, which deepens disagreements over managing the migration issue in Spain.
