Barak Warns of Gangs Spread in Sweida
The Druze-majority province of Sweida in southern Syria has experienced escalating security tensions in recent days. Local and foreign armed groups, including the national guard forces loyal to a Druze leader allied with Israel, have intervened, leading to the forced departure of a local figure, Atef Hanidi, after his kidnapping due to his statements criticizing a Druze leader allied with Israel. The US special envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, called for restraint, emphasizing the importance of implementing last year’s peace roadmap aimed at peacefully and comprehensively reintegrating the province into Syria while safeguarding the rights of the Druze community. This escalation coincides with clashes that resulted in injuries among security forces, amidst ongoing tensions since 2024, with Israel conducting military interventions to protect the Druze minority.
