Turkey probes opposition mayor for corruption
The Turkish police detained the Mayor of Mersin, who is affiliated with the Republican People's Party, along with 58 other suspects as part of an investigation into corruption related to fraudulent public procurement bids. This comes amid a judicial campaign targeting municipalities controlled by opposition parties, including prominent mayors such as Ekrem İmamoğlu in Istanbul, who also faces corruption charges and is currently in prison awaiting trial. The government states that the judiciary is independent, while the opposition asserts that the investigations are politically motivated.
