China expands hydrogen projects in five cities
China has announced a plan to expand the use of hydrogen energy through pilot projects spanning four years in five major cities, aimed at enhancing hydrogen applications in industries and transportation. The programs seek to develop equipment and energy technologies, support industrial hydrogen projects, promote fuel cell vehicles, and build hydrogen refueling stations. The targeted regions include the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and cross-regional groups connecting northeastern China, Xinjiang, the Yellow River regions, and the central plains. China is considered the world's largest producer and consumer of hydrogen, with production surpassing 39 million tons in 2025, and aims to increase fuel cell vehicle numbers to 100,000 by 2030. The government has allocated 1.6 billion yuan to support these initiatives. The initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and enable broader adoption of clean energy despite challenges related to costs and storage.
