Colombia gold mine collapse kills 14 workers
Fourteen workers have died and another seven were injured in the collapse of an unlicensed gold mine operating in a remote area of Nariño Province in southwestern Colombia, near the town of Santa Barbara de Iscuandi. The incident highlights the significant risks associated with illegal mining, which is often carried out by armed groups. Illegal mining activities have caused frequent disasters in the region over the past three months, resulting in the deaths of 27 people. The rugged terrain and lack of easy access to the area complicate rescue operations, increasing the danger of further loss of life. The region also faces security disturbances due to the activities of rebel groups. Authorities are calling for access for humanitarian aid, as pressure mounts on local communities that lack other economic alternatives, leading to a greater dependency on illegal mining activities.
