Turkey upholds military presence in Syria and Iraq
The article focused on Turkey's stance regarding the continued presence of its troops in Syria and Iraq. Turkish Defense Minister Yashar Güler explained that Turkey will keep its forces there until it fully guarantees border security. He also stated that Turkey will review its military posture once full stability is achieved and the Syrian government has exercised authority over all its territory without exception. Additionally, he mentioned that the number of Turkish troops in Syria had ranged between 16,000 and 18,000 soldiers before the fall of Assad's regime, but the current figures have not been specified. The assessment depends on field requirements and the level of terrorist threats. In Iraq, Turkish forces have been stationed since 2015, and their presence is evaluated based on operational needs. He emphasized that Turkey is monitoring efforts to disarm militias and security developments, and plans to strengthen military cooperation with Iraq.
