Saudi-Qatar rivalry 1998-2007
The matches between the Saudi national football team and its Qatari counterpart have seen three red cards prior to their highly anticipated encounter in the Gulf Cup semi-finals, with two of those dismissals occurring in previous matches. The first incident occurred at the 14th Gulf Cup in 1998 in Bahrain, when Spanish referee sent off Saudi defender Mohammed Khalil with a red card just before the match ended in a goalless draw. He was followed by a red card shown to Qatari player Abdul Aziz Hassan. The second incident took place at the 18th Gulf Cup in 2007 in Abu Dhabi, when Malaysian referee Ibrahim Al-Ghamn sent off Qatari defender Ibrahim Al-Ghamn after a strong tackle on Yasser Al-Qahtani. That match also ended in a 1-1 draw. This upcoming encounter comes after Saudi Arabia advanced to the semi-finals as the top team in their group, while Qatar qualified as runners-up with 7 points. Notably, there have been three red cards issued to participating teams in this year's Gulf Cup tournament.
