Belgium criticizes FIFA over World Cup appeal
The Belgian Football Association accused FIFA of disrupting the legal proceedings against the participation of American striker Folarin Balogun, after their decision to lift his suspension to allow him to play in Belgium's Round of 16 match at the 2026 World Cup, despite him having received a red card previously. The Belgians considered FIFA's decision unclear and said it undermined the principle of fair competition, protesting changes to the regulations and the lack of sufficient explanations, which sparked concerns over the integrity of the tournament. The accusations intensified amid potential political interventions by the American administration, and the crisis persisted ahead of the match. Both sides are now considered to be potentially heading to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
