Egypt pushes to reopen Rafah crossing
The article concerns Egypt's attempts to pressure for the reopening of the Rafah crossing for the entry of goods into Gaza, after Israel refused to allow this and insisted that the Kerem Shalom crossing be the sole outlet. Reports indicate that Israel considers controlling the Kerem Shalom crossing as a means to prevent the smuggling of weapons and dual-use materials into Gaza, while Egyptian authorities have not officially commented on the news. This comes amid ongoing Israeli escalation against Gaza, where military operations have resulted in the death of approximately 73,000 Palestinians, injury to over 173,000, and the destruction of 90% of the infrastructure since the start of the war in October 2023, with tensions continuing and international negotiations ongoing regarding the humanitarian situation in the enclave.
