Pro-government forces withdraw from anti-corruption efforts
The Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaydi's government is facing escalating political pressure as the deadline for the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq approaches at the end of September. The main challenges revolve around restricting weapons to state control and combating corruption. Recent weeks have seen increased disagreements within the "Coordination Framework" over the implementation of these issues, with some leaders stepping back from supporting the anti-corruption campaign and raising concerns about the mechanisms for weapon restriction after armed factions such as "Hezbollah Brigades" refused to surrender their weapons. Additionally, the government faces an economic crisis and complex security challenges, reaffirming its determination to continue accountability measures and efforts to strike a balance between maintaining political consensus and implementing reforms.
